RAIZ DE FÉNIX

RAIZ DE FÉNIX

FIRST BRAND IN THE WORLD TO CO-CREATE A FULLY ARTISANAL COLLECTION WITH ADIDAS

MAZ was unanimously selected in a competition organized by Inexmoda and adidas to develop the first collaboration for a complete collection with a Colombian designer, and the second in Latin America. The resulting collection was the outcome of a year-long creative process following the selection. Inspired by the Woman Colombia, the Phoenix Woman—resilient, free, and in constant transformation—she rises with strength, carrying the essence of her history and land. From Cundinamarca to Putumayo, artisan women have taught us the sacred value of life, the joy amidst adversity, and leadership through generosity. This collection celebrates the woman who knows herself, who grows stronger and expands—the Adidas woman, the MAZ WARRIOR—the one who never stops, the one who rises.

With this project, MAZ became the first brand in the world to co-create a fully handcrafted collection with adidas, the first Colombian brand to develop a full collection for the label, and the second in Latin America, after FARM Rio.

RAIZ DE FÉNIX

Transformation, regeneration, memory, serenity, and resilience are just a few of the many concepts that stem from the myth of the Phoenix. Above all, the myth is a reflection on death and rebirth.

The Phoenix feels its time has come and prepares for its transmutation with serenity. Wise in her knowing, she understands it is “the law of life,” and begins to gather herself and her memories, releasing what no longer serves her past. From her ashes, she regenerates in an endless cycle, integrating with the spirit of her history and her land.

For the Raíz de Fénix collection, Adidas x MAZ drew inspiration from the Woman Colombia—the Colombian Phoenix. The woman as territory, the Indigenous woman, the artisan woman; the one who speaks of “moving forward,” of “being free,” of “being better.”

CREATIVE

LABORATORY

P U T U M A Y O,  C O L O M B I A (2024)

In 2024, MAZ developed a creative laboratory in the Sibundoy Valley, Putumayo, alongside the artisan group Curarte, led by Eisen Jacanamijoy and Teresa Jacanamijoy, with the participation of over 25 artisans from the Kamëntsá Biyá communities.

The lab began with a cultural awareness workshop and evolved into the conceptual and material development of a beaded reinterpretation of the Adidas trefoil, revisiting this icon through the lens of ancestral knowledge.

As a result, over 450 trefoils were handcrafted by the community.

360° VIDEOS OF ARTISANS PIECES

As part of the Raíz de Fénix collection by Adidas x MAZ, we created a series of 360° videos documenting the artisanal development of three key pieces—from the technique to their final appearance in the campaign.

The goal of these videos is to walk through the entire creative process: from weaving, cutting, and sewing to finishing touches—highlighting each technique and the collective effort behind each garment. The beaded chestpiece was made by the Chakanas group in La Calera, Cundinamarca. The pants with beaded trefoils were crafted by the Curarte collective in the Sibundoy Valley, Putumayo. And the suit, woven on a horizontal loom and screen-printed by hand, was produced in Bogotá.

These videos offer an immersive look into the value of craftsmanship, the territories, and the people who made this collection possible.

FITTING

The fittings for the Raíz de Fénix collection were a key part of the creative process. They were carried out collaboratively between the MAZ Manuela Álvarez team and the Adidas team, with the goal of adjusting and perfecting each piece developed by artisans and workshops across various regions of Colombia.

During these sessions, we reviewed elements such as silhouette, fabric behavior, and finishing quality—allowing us to make joint decisions and ensure that each garment responded to both the conceptual design and global quality standards.

FASHION FILM

The fashion film for the Raíz de Fénix collection was shot in a cloud páramo in Cundinamarca, a landscape that echoes the collection’s core concepts: rebirth, territory, and natural power.

The fashion film was directed by Sebastián Comba, the campaign photography was done by Juan Moore, and styling was led by Iván Ramírez.
